Dennery & Mabouya / Brand development

Dennery & Mabouya are 2 geographically connected regions of St Lucia in the Caribbean that have a long held deep suspicion and distrust of each other. One region is a valley and agricultural, one coastal with a fishing community. Having been adversely affected by the deterioration of the banana industry over the past fifteen years, the communities had to act together and were looking to become a showcase for community-based tourism. Rather than create fixed icons we wanted to provide the basis of a graphic language that could be developed and owned by the participants, using the game of picture consequences or Exquisite Corpse as a start point. Images from each participant were incongruously placed together creating mythical animals that created a shared narrative. The “Shanana” was felt by the community to most accurately reflect the communities history and aspiration but was sadly vetoed by a religious leader for being “Phallic”.

The Lionfish was the genus of the idea and hints at the geography of the area and stories from each locality.
